the sling diaries: history

This is the fifth installment of a six-month series called the Sling Diaries, sponsored by Sakura Bloom. We were sent two three Sakura Bloom slings to review, in exchange for a collection of entries based on different themes each month. I’m excited & honored to be a part of this project! Stay up to date with all of the participating families on the Sling Diaries Pinterest page.

Just before we left for the beach, I received an email alerting all of the Sling Diaries participants to our shop accounts… we’d been gifted enough money for a third sling! The idea was to purchase something single-layer and lightweight, to help beat the summer heat – which, in our case, is ridiculously humid. I chose this one, and I think it might be my favorite yet! It came in the mail while we were gone, but I’ll be sure to use it on our final submission!
There are two ways to get to the Outer Banks, and one of them includes using the ferry system. My husband and kids had never ridden it before, and it had been nearly two decades since I had. I’m not sure if we’ll ever get up that way again, so I decided to take the scenic route.
When I was little, my grandfather used to load up all of the cousins in an RV and take us on a weeklong summer trip. He called it, “Kamp Kamayo” – a mixture of his and my grandmother’s names. Destination: unknown, but you could bet it included historic sites and KOA campgrounds. One year, we spent the week traveling the Outer Banks – riding ferries and tandem bikes, swimming at rural beaches, and climbing lighthouses.
I try best to follow in my Papa’s footsteps when it comes creating memories for my own kids. He’s still alive and able to articulate the sort of legacy he wants to leave, and I count it a blessing that he’s able to watch that legacy come to life. I made sure to get us on that ferry last week, even though we nearly missed it. I hope you enjoy these photos, Papa. We shared our snacks evenly and didn’t play video games. This post is for you.
